Sound permeates every aspect of our lives. The wind rustling through the trees, water falling from the sky or flowing across rocks, the pop, crack and hiss as the fire burns, the singing of birds, and buzzing of insects all create the soundtrack of nature.
Sound healing practices date back thousands of years. They can promote relaxation and sleep and support physical and emotional well-being.
Drums, flutes, singing bowls, gongs, chimes and other instruments are often used to create a calming environment. The deep vibration of the instruments allows participants to release physical tension, encourages the brain to release feel-good endorphins and the bodily fluids to reset.
Sound healing may be included as part of music therapy practice, but not all sound healing practitioners are music therapists.
Deep vibrations produced from these instruments affect each persons’ body in different ways and, for some, they can bring up deep seated feelings and emotions. Music therapists have specific training and experience and can help participants address these emotions in a positive way.

Emotional regulation is as it sounds, the ability to control or regulate emotions.
Life brings many challenges, and most of the time, the only thing we can control is our response to those challenges. Learning to regulate emotions helps to maintain perspective, find some calm in the storm, and think through our responses.
During times of extreme stress, your brain releases cortisol, this is the “fight or flight” hormone that helps to protect you in dangerous situations. But for those of us that have multiple stressors piled on top of each other, the brain continues to release cortisol, which leads to anxiety, loss of sleep and chronic health issues.
Emotional regulation techniques signal the brain to stop producing cortisol so that your body can get the rest needed to manage during difficult times.
